How many credit cards do you need? Depends. Isn’t that a terrible answer? Unfortunately, it’s the truth. If you’re neck deep in credit card debt, the answer is zero. If you’re not in debt and want to maximize your credit card rewards, you probably will need at most three or four. For everyone else looking to maintain good credit, chances are you’ll need only two.

When people talk about credit scores, they’re usually talking about your FICO credit score. FICO stands for Fair Isaac Corporation, the company that created the closely-guarded FICO score equation that is most commonly used today. What’s funny is that in reality you have three different FICO scores because there are three different credit bureaus that collect information about you – Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Your FICO score is calculated based on the information they have on you, so it’s important for you to make sure they have accurate information. Get on top of your credit score now so that later when you want to purchase a home, car or get another loan, you’ll get better rates and save money.
